This article will guide you through the process of applying AW Roof Patch with PolyFab specifically on plywood external corners. However, bear in mind that the same method can be used for other substrates or whenever PolyFab is necessary.
It is important to note that AW Roof Patch typically does not require the use of PolyFab. Unless it is being applied to plywood joints or other areas with high-stress levels. Additionally, PolyFab is recommended for larger splits, cracks, or holes that measure greater than 3mm.
Materials Needed:
- AW Roof Patch
- Trito PolyFab
- Clean cloth or rag
- Gloves (Nitrile is best)
- Brush for application
- Scissors
- Measuring tape (optional)
Step 1: Prepare the Area
1. Begin by cleaning the external corner thoroughly, removing any loose debris, dirt, or old roofing silicone. A clean surface ensures proper adhesion of the AW Roof Patch, although the surface may be wet.
Step 2: Cut Fiber
1. Measure the external corner's length using a measuring tape.
2. Cut a piece of fiber from the Trito PolyFab material to match the measured length, ensuring it will cover the entire corner appropriately.
3. In the centre of the fiber, create a snip that extends towards the middle of the cut fiber. (as seen in photo)
Step 3: Apply the First Coat of AW Roof Patch
1. Using a brush, apply the first coat of AW Roof Patch along the external corner. Ensure the patch extends slightly beyond the corner onto the adjacent surfaces.
2. Work the roof patch thoroughly into any cracks or gaps in the corner to create a solid foundation for the repair.
Step 4: Place and Smooth the Fiber on one side
1. Immediately after applying the first coat of AW Roof Patch, place the pre-cut fiber onto the patch, ensuring to line it up with the corner.
2. Press the fiber down firmly onto the wet patch, smoothing it out to remove any wrinkles or air bubbles. Only do one side at this time as we need more AW Roof Patch before continuing.
Step 5: Apply Additional AW Roof Patch
1. Dip the brush into the AW Roof Patch and apply a generous amount on top of the fiber, directly between where the fiber will overlap.
2. Carefully press the overlapping part of the fiber onto the fresh patch, ensuring there are no gaps or loose edges.
3. Utilize the brush or gloves to smooth out the fiber and secure it in place. Make sure the corners are properly adhered.
1. Apply a final coat of AW Roof Patch on top of the entire repaired area, including the fiber and the surrounding patch.
2. Use the brush to spread and smooth the final coat, ensuring a consistent and seamless finish. The AW Roof Patch has some self-smoothing properties that will help remove some of the brush strokes.
3. You may require an additional coat to fully enclose the PolyFab. This can be done after it is mostly dry. Depending on temperature this is usually 6-24 hours but can be quicker.
4. If top coating (Painting) Allow the AW Roof Patch to dry for at least a week before top coating.
To maximize the durability of the patch, it is advisable to apply a topcoat on top of it. This serves two purposes – it enhances the visual appeal by blending seamlessly with the surrounding area, and it also ensures that the patch will have a lifespan equal to or potentially longer than the original roof.
1. Smooth bottom side fiber
2. Smooth top side fiber
3. Finish off with another full coat.
By following these straightforward steps, you can easily apply AW Roof Patch to external corners and effectively repair any leaks or damage. Remember to clean the area thoroughly, cut the fiber, apply the first coat of AW Roof Patch, smooth the fiber, apply additional AW Roof Patch between overlap, smooth off and finish it off with a final coat of AW Roof Patch. Topcoat for extended life and a seamless finish. With careful application, your roof's external corners will be properly repaired and protected from future issues, prolonging the life of your roof.
